Olivia Jane Andrews, widow of John, applied for a Civil War Widow's Pension from the state of Louisiana. In her affidavit, she claimed that John Magee enlisted at Franklinton, Louisiana, 7 April 1862, into Company A, 3rd Louisiana Cavalry (formerly known as the 9th), "Wingfield's Partisan Rangers" and that he served until the surrender of Port Hudson in June 1863. He later re-enlisted 7 Sept 1863 and served until the end of the war. Her pension was rejected, "record insufficient."
