Facts and Events
John was born in Mara Township, Onario, Canada, one of 12 kids, to Angus McDonald and Mary Ann Donovan.
McDonald is a just an abbreviation of the name MacDonald. I believe the family in Scotland was MacDonald, but all of the records I find in Ontario say McDonald. John & Bertha's marriage license says "McDonald." John's death certificate and cemetery record shows him as John McDonald, although is wife Bertha at some point switched to MacDonald before she died.
The last census John was in in Ontario, was 1881. He and Bertha married in 1889 in Seattle, Washington. They settled in Bellingham, Washington until John left Bertha and their 5 children, and moved to Fairbanks, Alaska to first work on the railroad, and eventually chase the gold rush dream. John died in Fairbanks in May of 1932 at the age of 76.
