    JOHN PETER ALBERT LEONARD
John Peter Albert Leonard, the youngest of six children, was born to John Alexander and Ellen Steveson Leonard near the village of Leeds in Chautauqua County on August 8, 1893. His first 29 years, except for infantry service in World War I, was spent on a farm near Leeds. Most of his life he remained a farmer, however, long periods of time were spent in public service in Howard. Peter settled in Howard in 1922, working in Shapland's garage on Washington Street, and married Emaline Andrews on June 30 the following year. In 1929, he became superintendent of the Howard water department, a position in which he was also responsible for the provision of sewage and gas service to the City of Howard as well as its water service. He remained in this position until 1943 when Pete devoted full time to his farm in the Mound Branch district, west of Howard. In the early fifties, Pete again interrupted his farming to begin a ten year tenure as the caretaker at Polk Daniels Lake. In 1961, he again returned to his farm where he remained until poor health encouraged him to move to Sedan in order to be near medical care. It was in the Sedan City Hospital that he died near midnight on the 24th of June, 1979.
Pete and Emaline had three children: Marjorie Curtis of Kansas City, MO, John Albert who died in infancy, and Carl Leonard of Falls Church, Virginia. A granddaughter, Lisa Curtis, is a teacher in Sullivan, MO and a grandson, Andrew Curtis, of the U. S. Navy, who is homeported at Charleston, South Carolina. Besides his immediate family, he is survived by sixteen nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 1979 in the Zimmerman Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Don Harper of the First Baptist Church of Howard officiating. Mrs. Robin Smith was the organist, and Mrs. Curtis Morgan sang two selections. The active casketbearers were Adron Hebb, Dennis Crisp, Bill Redmond, Lynam Snodderley, Bob Stephens and George Curtis. Honorary casketbearers were Byron Stiles, Roy Stiles, Raymond Henderson, Fred Shephard, John Weyrauch, Hershel Stephens and Willard Morss. Interment was held in the Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard with the Carter-Rader Post 149 of Howard conducting the American Legion graveside services. A memorial has been established with the Kansas Childrens Service League and May be left at the funeral home. The Zimmerman Funeral Home directed the services.
