John went by Jean, as well. As an infant, John moved to New Rochelle with his parents from New York City. The family then moved to Cortlandt Manor in Westchester Co, now Yorktown, John later moved to Dutchess County, NY as an adult. He appears on the June 1757 tax list in the Southern District, now in Putnam Co. Between 1771-1774, John and his family moved to Cornwall, Orange Co, NY. John held several offices. Along with his sons, Thomas and John, John owned King's Ferry. They ferried Washington's army over and the army even camped on the Lamoreaux land. In June 1775, John signed the Cornwall Association Pledge to the American Revolution.

John fought at Stoney Point in Colonel Benson's regiment. He also served under Colonel Zachariah Du Bois during the Revolution. During the Battle of Ft Monroe, John and many from Cornwall were captured and made POWs. Under the name Jean Lameari, Jean was placed on the prisoner of war ship The Old Jersey. These ships were full of disease, abuse by the British, smallpox and death. John survived.
