John Kirkpatrick was born 14 Feb 1770 in Camden District, York County, S C and died near Glasgow in Jefferson County, IA, 23 Apr 1845. He is bur ied there in Gilmer Cemetery. He married abt. 1789 Jane Hope, daughter o f John and Jane (Meek) Hope of the 96 Dist., Union Co., SC, where she w as born 20 Jun 1774. She died 1 Jan 1858 at Berwick, Warren Co., Illin ois. John made the claim that he was the only surviving child of Thoma s in an endorsement of the pension application of Mrs. Margaret (Craig) W atson Kirkpatrick Dodds in 1843 (see entry for John's father, Thomas Ki rkpatrick).* John moved from South Carolina to Wilson County, TN, sometime between 1 795 and 1798. Wilson county is just east of Nashville, TN. On 8 March 1 802 John witnessed a deed from John Rhea to David Foster for 200 Acres o n Stones River. John Kirkpatrick was taxed on 180 acres on Suggs Creek i n 1803 and 1804. A Wilson county deed dated 29 Nov 1805 records John's p urchase of a 180 acre tract of land near Stones River from William Nash o f Rutherford County, TN. In 1806 he was taxed on this tract of land. I n 1816 John bought an additional 150 acres on Stones River from William N ash who was still of Rutherford County. In 1819 he sold 322 acres on S tones River to William Hamilton, apparently in preparation for his move t o Illinois. He bought 320 acres of Federal land in 1819 on the west si de of the present Coffeen Lake in the south part of East Fork Township i n Montgomery County, Illinois. Two of his sons, Thomas and Josiah, eac h bought an adjacent 80 acres. The land cost $2.00 per acre. He settl ed and farmed there on Hurricane Creek near Van Burensburg. About 1830 h e moved to Sangamon County, Illinois, where he lived adjacent to his br other James who had bought land in Sangamon County in 1825. In 1839 he a nd his brother moved to Jefferson County, IA, where they both died with in a few days of each other in 1845. Jane returned to Illinois and liv ed with her daughter Jane Meek Morse, in Warren County. John was a Presbyterian affiliated with the Bullock's Creek church in Y ork County, South Carolina. Later he was an Elder in the Suggs Creek C hurch near Stones River in Wison County in Tennessee. In 1823 the firs t Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Illinois was held a t his house in Montgomery County, Illinois. Family correspondence indi cates that he served in the military and that his wife ran the farm whi le he was away at war. This was possibly the War of 1812. Whether or n ot he was in the War of 1812, we do know that on 21 May 1832, he was co mmissioned First Lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Army, I llinois Mounted Volunteers for service in the Black Hawk War. We think this John and a James Kirkpatrick, whom we believe to be broth ers, are often confused in Madison County, Illinois, and in other areas w ith John and James Kirkpatrick, two brothers of another wing of the fam ily. He was married to Jane Hope (daughter of John Hope and Jane Meek) in 1789 in South Carolina. Jane Hope was born on 20 Jun 1774 in 96 District, Union Co., South Carolina. She died on 1 Jan 1858 in Berwick, Warren Co., Illinois. She was buried in Berwick Cemetery, Berwick, Warren Co., Illinois. John Kirkpatrick and Jane Hope had the following children: +206 i.
