The birth date (1 Jan 1755) comes from an application for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. "1 Jan" is always suspect, as it might simply be a convenience to show an exact birth date, but if so, the applicant did not feel the necessity of doing so for John's wife, whose birth date is given as "abt. 1761"
