Mrs. Edward Evans, Williamsburg, Iowa.

 My Dear Friend:
Let me assure you that I am delighted at your good letter. Recently I have had it in mind that late this fall, I would try to get to see the old home, and the dear ones at the place of my boyhood, and the resting place of my adored mother and father, and sister Elizabeth.
I shall, indeed regret if I fail to join you on that day. I have wondered if your services are to be in Welsh altogether. In my earlier boyhood days at Williamsburg, I used to be quite a sticker of Welsh speaking, but for something like forty years I have not heard a Welsh sermon, and hardly had a chance to exchange a dozen Welsh words with any one, and I doubt that now I could deliver a half dozen Welsh sentences without breaking. But I love as much as ever the dear old language, her traditions, her sentiments, her characteristics, and particularly her religious fervor. And the old church that took me into its membership, Oh! that I might once more join in its devotions. "Seventy Years Old!" What a long time! my father and mother came to Williamsburg from Vermont at the close of the Civil War. Several years after the founding of the church there.
But my father's brother, Richard Williams, was one of the original members. How well I remember landing at Marengo, and my father hiring a man for $2.00 to take us as a family to Williamsburg. Prairie nearly all the way, and just north of "the Burg". And then landing at my Aunt's house, just over the bridge in the beautiful, little grove. And then crossing Old Man's Creek on a foot log to go to the old log house, Middle House, our home for many years. Oh, Halcyon Days! with my angel mother, and good father, and devoted sisters Elizabeth and Ann. And joining the Congregational church with John E. and Will D. Evans. All to my memory like yesterday.
Do you wonder that I hope to be with you on October 24th, yet, it may not be.
I thank you fervently for your kind letter.
                       Yours very truly
                               J. Jones Jr.

OBITUARY OF JOHN J. JONES Who Died at His Home in Minneapolis on Monday, Sept. 2 in His 82nd Year SCHOOLMAN OVER 40 YEARS Superintendent of Iowa County School for Several Terms In the 1880's

John J. Jones, a former resident of Troy Township, and for more than forty years engaged in educational work, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs, C, O. Newcomb, 4933 Colfax Ave. S. Minneapolis, his son-in-law and daughter, on Monday, September 2, after a week's illness. He was in his 82nd year.
The funeral services were conducted on Thursday at 3 p, m. at Lakewood, Chapel in Minneapolis. Dr. J. W. Taylor, a friend of over thirty years officiated. Out of town relatives present were Mrs, Tracy Jones and son, Lowell, of Aberdeen, S. Dak., and Mrs. Ellsworth Roberts, a nephew, of Wymore, Nebr.
A niece, Mrs. S. N. Boland resides at Williamsburg, and a nephew, Mr. Marcus Evans, formerly of Williamsburg, resides at Pontiac, Ill. The late W. J. Evans of Williamsburg, was a nephew.
Born at Festiniog, Wales, Oct. 27, 1853, as a small child Mr. Jones came to the United States, the family settling in Vermont. When he was about 10 years old, they moved west to Williamsburg, Iowa. He was graduated in 1880 from the University of Iowa and on June 30th of the

same year he was married to Elizabeth Hickman.

His active career of over 40 years was spent in school work in Iowa and South Dakota as county superintendent and in charge of city school, with the exception of one year in the state of Nevada. On his retirement ten years ago he came to Minneapolis, where he has since resided.
He was a member of the Masonic order, becoming a Knight Templar about 1890. He joined the Congregational Church in his youth and had been a devoted worker in church and Sunday school throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Newcomb and grandson, Darrel, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Tracy Jones of Aberdeen, S. Dak. and five grandchildren, Horace, Betty, Carroll, Kenneth and Lowell, besides nieces and nephews in Iowa, Nebraska, and a cousin, Sir Evan Jones, of Bryn Meirion, N. Wales.
The deceased passed from his youth to and beyond his majority in Iowa County, and it will be remembered that in the early '80's he was elected as superintendent of the county schools and was honored with a second term. Leaving for South Dakota, he was soon superintendent of schools at Aberdeen, his tenure running for long years.
Many older residents here well remember John J. Jones; in his home community he was always referred to as "Little Johnny Jones", but it was a designation imparted in respect of the highest order, and his leadership in church, civic affairs, and in educational interests was at all times valuable and highly appreciated. Through long years he kept in closest touch with the old community he so dearly loved and in which he was held in such high esteem. His frequent visits were always welcome, and it was through these visits he kept the old friendships in such excellent repair.
He lived to an advanced age, and the news of his death was heard here with unfeigned feelings of regret.
To the bereaved family, Williamsburg extends the sincerest condolences.
