About 1854 John Wesley Jacques and his brother Chipman came to Huron County. John located on lot 16 con 13 in twp of Howick. He cleared a small clearing and built a cabin a few feet to the north of the present dwelling. The story is told that in the fall John went back to his father's house. When he returned in the spring the Indians had burned his cabin. He had to start from the beginning. The large stone house was built in 1869. He served on the township council 1880-85 and as Huron County reeve 1885-90.
