According to H. D. Baskerville, the Rev. John Holmes was educated at Killygordon School and graduated at Glasgow University. He was licensed to preach in Jan 1776 and ordained at Donogheady, County Tyrone on 29 apr 1779 where he served until 20 Jun 1830.

Holmes Memorial

John married Eliza McCrea. Her memorial is a flat slate slab that has the inscription, ‘Here Lies The Body of Mrs Elizabeth Holmes who departed this life June 16 1795 aged 34 years’,

TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN HOLMES, J.P. OF BROSNEY, DIED 12TH JUNE 1866, AGED 84 YEARS. AND OF HIS WIFE ELIZA HOLMES DIED 25TH DEC 1876. ALSO THEIR CHILDREN JOSHUA ALFRED HOLMES DIED 28TH SEP 1871. ROBERT McCREA HOLMES DIED 8TH FEB 1873. JAMES McCREA HOLMES DIED 14th JAN 1876. CHARLES ALBERT HOLMES DIED 14th DEC 1881. DAVID HOLMES DIED 17TH APRIL 1885. JOHN HOLMES DIED 21ST AUG 1887. HENRY HOLMES MB DIED 18th APRIL 1892. MARY HOLMES DIED 4TH MAY 1909. WM CHRISTOPHER McCREA HOLMES DIED 14TH MAY 1911. ALL OF WHOM ARE HERE INTERRED.
