John Hodges was baptised on 9th October 1826 at Winsham in Somerset, son of Sarah Hodges, formerly Forsey, and her husband William Hodges, a shepherd. John was the third of the couple's six children. In the late 1820s the family left Winsham and moved fourteen miles north to Burton Pynsent, a hamlet which at that time straddled the parishes of Curry Rivel and Drayton. John's father died in 1834, when John was seven years old.

John appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his mother and siblings at Burton Pynsent. In 1851 he was working as an agricultural labourer. He has yet to be researched after 1851.
