Left LONDON 18 Aug 1871 on Ship ROYAL DANE Arriving BRISBANE 2 DEC 1871 NEWSPAPER NOTICE 12/05/1901: A man named John Hodge, aged 60 years, employed at the Gympie Railway Station as a porter, met with a sudden & horrible death, while on duty on Thursday morning. A cattle train from Brisbane was coming to the station about 11.10 o'clock, & the engine hav ing whistled, porters D. Currie & Hodge ran down the platform to open the gates. ... Hodge was standing by of Currie & as the train passed over the level crossing, the former made a dart to jump on the engine, but his foot caught the gate stop & he misse d his step......
