John Nicholas Henshaw, (Hancher)
Facts and Events
Born: Either Philadelphia, Pennsylvania or Massachusetts.
John is purported to be the son of Elizabeth Somner and John HENSHAW, son of Joshua Henshawe (Of Dorchester, Massachusetts), but there are no records of John's having been married, either in Pennsylvania or Massachusetts. [Elizabeth Sumner married Joshua Henshaw, not John Henshaw, in Dorchester, Joshua had a son John who married 1730 Mary Stedman and was living in Boston until at least 1750. There is no sign this family had any connection to the Massachusetts family.] Neither a wife nor a son is mentioned in John's will. It is suggested that Nicholas and his family moved to Virginia and his father, John, in 1766. But that presents two problems: (1) his second son, William, was born March 6, 1736, at the family plantation, Mill Creek, in Frederick County, Virginia [later to become Berekeley County, West Virginia]; and (2) the family belonged to the Hopewell Friends MM [Virginia] in 1760, under the name of HANCHER. Furthermore, his will, dated September 21, 1774, was signed Nicholas HANCHER.
