ID: I239 Name: John Mitchell HENRY Sr. Surname: Henry Given Name: John Mitchell Suffix: Sr. Prefix: Rev. Sex: M Birth: ABT 1788 in , Pendleton, South Carolina, USA Death: ABT 1842/1845 in , Neshoba, Mississippi, USA

NOTES: Some say that John's middle name was Madison instead of Mitchell, will need to do more checking to be sure what his middle name really was.

CENSUS RECORDS: On the 1800 census he would have been in the under 10 years old bracket. According to the year we have for his birth he would have been about 13 in 1800.

CENSUS RECORDS: In 1810, he is probably the male in the 16 to 26 year old bracket listed with Samuel Henry Sr. in Livingston County, Kentucky.

CENSUS RECORDS: 1820 Lawrence County, Alabama John HENRY 1 male over 21 (John), 1 male under 21 (Andrew), 1 female over 21 (Jane), 1 female under 21 (Malinda) (It should be 2 males and 2 females under 21 in 1820.)

CENSUS RECORDS: 1830 Greene County, Alabama page 370 John HENRY 2 males under 5 (William & Patrick), 2 males 5 to 10 (James & John), 1 male 10 to 15 (Joseph), 1 male 15 to 20 (Andrew), 1 male 30 to 40 (?), 1 male 40 to 50 (John), 1 female 5 to 10 (Mary), 2 females 15 to 20 (Malinda & Elmira), 1 female 1 female 30 to 40 (Jane)

CENSUS RECORDS: There is a John Henry in the right age bracket living in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi in 1840 and there is also a John Henry close to the right age living in Bibb County, Alabama in 1840, but not sure if either one is who we are looking for. The one in Oktibbeha County has 5 males and 2 females living with him but none of the females are the right age to be Jane. However if she had left him because of his other marriage that could be why.

CHURCH RECORDS: To begin the history of Rock Creek Baptist Church we must first give a brief history of our ?mother? church. Canaan Baptist Church (the oldest Baptist Church in Jefferson County, the third oldest Baptist Church in Alabama), was organized in 1818. The church was accordingly constituted of eighteen members, eight males and ten females. Brother John HENRY was their first pastor. He was pastor from 1818-1822. (Info received from Bobby Bryan of Alabama.)

HISTORY: The following little history received from Harold Horton in October 2007. Rev. John M. Henry, Sr. born in old Pendleton District (now Anderson County) South Carolina was born about 1787 and died in Neshoba County, Mississippi about 1842 or 1845. Eron Sharp wrote: "Mr. Monroe Pickens is the person who finally discovered the Parents of our Jane Pickens Henry. He made a special trip to Anderson Court House, S.C. and found the will of Robert Dowdle and the will of Andrew Pickens and final settlement of the estate of both whick confirmed that our Jane Pickens was daughter of Andrew and Margaret Dowdle Pickens. He also suggested I try Livingston County, KY for further research as he knew some Pickens went there in 1803. Consequently I made two trips at different stages of my research to that county and as the saying goes "hit the jackpot". Not only did I discover much material about the Henry's, but found the marriage record of our John M. Henry to Jane Pickens in 1810." "Vickie, Rev. John M. Henry was buried in a pasture on a bad day. They had to get him in the ground quick." Mrs. Ray's Account: "John M. Henry died below Dowdville somewhere. Bill Griffin who had married Lucinda Kirkland had started to the funeral in an old ox cart to get to Harmony Graveyard. It set in to raining and they had to camp by the creek all night. They had John Henry's body in the wagon also. The waters were up all over the road in the swamp and was still rising. During the night sometime the body became offensive beyond endurance. Nathan Ray and Neal McDougal came by. It was getting late in the afternoon of the next day since they had camped all night and they feared to face another night of it. It was then thundering and lightening. Neal McDougal said, "I get right over there in that field and dig a grave and have a decent Christian like funeral and decently bury him in that field. It's getting late the creek is rising, and the body is bursted. It's going to rain all night." So they had the service. There was no preacher present, so Steve Tullos said a prayer. They sang "Mark from the Tombs a doleful sound" and they buried him right there in Neal McDougal's field. They all had to get back home that night, for they lived somewhere between Philadelphia and Dixon at the Feb Kirkland old place. Mrs Ray was a daughter of Bill Griffin and Lucinda Kirkland. Bill Griffin was son of Daniel Griffin who had come from Griffin, GA. Lucinda Kirkland was daughter of one of the Kirkland's mentioned in the deed of trust above. The Kirkland's were wealthy people with a lot of slaves, a large farm and a store. Harmony Graveyard which they were trying to reach is at Harmony Baptist Church, located on the highway between Edinburg and Philadelphia. Apparently John Henry lived down near Dowdville and the site of John Henry's grave is unmarked, but can still be located, on a place which belonged to the Richardson family in 1945. It is now a pasture near the road side.

NOTES: Get your records out; we are hot on the trail! I found this in my files as a note on John Mitchell Henry. Working together sure has its bonuses! Anderson/Shue, THE JOHN PICKENS FAMILY, COMBINED EDITION: p. 253-254: "Andrew Pickens HENRY... was the son of Rev. John Madison HENRY and his wife, Jane PICKENS. John M. HENRY was a pioneer Baptist preacher in Alabama, coming there with Andrew JACKSON during the Creek War of 1812-1814 and remained. Settled first in Jones Valley where the city of Birmingham now stands, organized a church there called Canaan and was pastor of Ruhama Baptist Church which is still a strong church in Birmingham. Later he moved to Greene County, Alabama, and about 1840 to Neshoba County, Mississippi where he died in 1845... John Madison HENRY was the son of Samuel HENRY and his wife whose name is not known...." - Margie R. Pearce Ponchatoula, LA 4 DEC 2000- Change Date: 26 Jun 2008 at 12:50:27
