re John's birthdate...family legend say 1 Jul 1884, death rec lists 2 Apr 1845. 

At time of death res was 320 Melbourne, Ward 5, Detroit, Wayne co, MI, USA.  Marriage registration #2b-622 (first quarter/Jan-Mar) in British  Index.

As per 1881 census index: Scotland lists John's occupation as "Painter-Royal Navy". 

Death rec cause of death:  Apoplexy & Chronic Lead Poisoning.

At time of marriage (1873) was 29 yrs old, bachelor, Petty Officer Royal Navy, on duty H.M. Ship Pembroke.

Entire family (including Amelia BIRD, Lavinia's mother, came to Detroit, MI cir 1903.
