[edit] Information on John Hawkins592. John Hawkins Sr.747 signed a will in 1715/6 in Virginia Colony, Richmond Co..747 John's will mentions Wm, John, Ben, and James as his sons. John (Hoakins), Han. Par., will, 16 Jan 1715/16, 7 Mar 1715/1716 Now wife Elizabth, being at this time very sick and weak; if she dies, freeman John SUTTLE Jr, which now liveth with me, to remain and live on the plant, whereon my family now liveth; sones William, John, Benjamin, and James; dau. Sarah and Elizabeth; Richard and James BUTLER to care for six children, but, in case Henry WOOD doth think fit to take son William, I desire he may have him, providing the said Henry will learn him the trade and calling of a plasterer; Richard BUTLER to take son John and daus. Sarah and Elizabeth: James BUTLER to take sons Benjamin and James until age 20. ex: fr. Isaac ARNOLD; wits: Isaac ARNOLD, Rebecca BUTLER, John SUTTLE. ...his children were to be raised by James and Richard Butler (only James Butler died shortly thereafter and Richard raised them) except for Wm1 -- he was to be apprenticed to Henry Wood (who later married Sarah Hauxford Willis Wood Hudson Turberville - who is Sarah Willis' mother and Sarah m. Ben1). Ben1 was executor of Richard Butler's will in 1735. By 1736 Ben1 joined his brothers Wm1 and John1 in OC in the area of Chestnut Mts (Clark Mts now). There are several court orders in the Richmond Co., VA (which is where we find John1 and his children) before 1715 and then after his death about his estate. Rebecca Butler and Isaac Arnold were the witnesses on John1's will. He died in 1715/6 in Virginia Colony, Richmond Co..747 John1 Hawkins and Elizabeth (Butler?) died in an epidemic. He was born. I think the probability of John1 being the father of Ben1, John1, Wm1 and Jas1 is pretty high. I think any reports of Wm Hawkins and Mary being Ben1 parents are contortions made to shove Ben1 into it to claim Sir John Hawkins as direct ancestor. John1's neighbors included Sarah Willis - Sarah's GF, Sarah's Father, and Sarah's mother's family - Hauxford. When Ben is in OC later, living near him is Sarah Hauxford Willis Wood Hudson Turburville - mother of his wife - at that time she was Mrs. Wood - who Wm1 was apprenticed to in John1 will - there is other evidence that points to the high probability John1 is the father of our Ben1 John's neighbors were John Willis, Wm Willis, Hauxford among others. (Janet) Elizabeth Butler? and John Hawkins Sr. were married.747 Rebecca Butler and Isaac Arnold were the witnesses on John1's will. It is postulated that since Rebecca and her sons were involved prominently with John1 that it is thought his wife is Butler. Also a phrase in John's will "now wife" has some thinking there is at least one previous Mrs. John1. Some people have proposed Christian Waugh, widow (w) of John Waugh -- now that's interesting I (Janet S.) looked into this and found Christian may not have been widowed until 1702 and she didn't die until I think 1720 - so does not seem probable, but in looking Waugh up, it came up he had a wife named Elizabeth Hawkins who was married to a John Hawkins. I have not pursued that any further - may be somebody else has something on this?? Peter Butler, Rebecca's deceased husband, in 1690s I believe. Nothing else on Butlers has been found, though I am in touch with a descendant of James. Also someone proposed Melungeon for Butler origins, but I didn't find anything to tie this for sure. Also a note should be made that a John Hawkins, a Bristol merchant, died in Caleb Butler's home in Westmoreland Co. in 1702; Caleb Butler is the father of Jane Butler who married John Washington, GF of the Geo. Washington. Also the land John1 had was part of the land grant of John Washington.

William Hawkins Wit: Uriel Mallory, Wm Strother, Thomas Brown Proved 24 Oct 1776 "Unto my son William Hawkins twenty shillings sterling if he should be living at the time of my decease and if dead to descend to my son John Hawkins. Unto my son John Hawkins two cows and calves whenever he leaves of overseeing and goes to house keeping. To my beloved wife Elizabeth Hawkins all the residue of my estate during her natural life and after her decease to be divided as follows: Unto my son Bejamin Hawkins one shilling current money. Unto my son John Hawkins all the rest of my estate. My beloved wife Elizabeth Hawkins executrix and my son John Hawkins executor." William (X) Hawkins Witnesses were Uriel Mallory, Wm. Strother, and Thomas Brown. He died after 20 January 1776 in USA, Virginia, Orange Co., St. Thomas Parish.749,1254 Mildred Showalter Farmer, Bites and Pieces of the Hawkins Family Puzzle; p. 5 William was the son of John Hawkins and Mary Long born about 1710 in VA. William married (Mary?) ________. They had three children. William Hawkins, son of John Hawkins and Mary Long leaves records in both Orange and Culpeper Counties and from Crozier's SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY RECORDS 1721-1800.: "1 Nov 1742. William Hawkins of St. Thomas Parish, Orange County, VA., Planter, and Mary, his wife, to Abraham Estes of St. Stephen's Parish, King and Queen County, VA., 24} cur. 110 ac., part of land sold to Edward Pigg, Larkin Chew, George Smith, Richard X Bradley. 2 Nov 1742." Records in Culpeper County, VA. show William's wife as Mary until 1760. Elizabeth is the name connected with him after that date. Note:William Hawkins married Margaret OR MARTHA ?. He was the father of William Hawkins who MARRIED JANE SHARP. WILLIAM HAWKINS' FATHER WAS JOHN HAWKINS THE While it is known that John Hawkins Sr. had a son named William whom he mentions in his will of 1715/16, it is not known if that William is the same one who died abt 1776 in Orange Co. VA, leaving a will of that date. Current theory is that they are the same, but this is not proven. Hence, the info here of wife Elizabeth and three sons, John, William, and Benjamin, which is taken from the 1776 will, is not yet proven to belong to John's son. We have this William here that was earlier noted in the Spottsysyvania Co. records, (Crozier), outlined by Milly Farmer, in "Bits and Pieces" .She thought he was a son of John and Mary (Long) Hawkins, but this has since been doubted, because of dates, etc. This Wm. first was married to a Mary and second to a Elizabeth--Had sons Wm. Benj. and John. I think he was the son Wm. of John and Elizabeth Butler.
This is the John who possibly is the brother of Benj who. m Sarah Willis. There is some thought he may have possibly married Margaret Jennings. William and Benjamin are living nearby on road records from Orange Co. William Hawkins also shows up on the Tithe list in 1734 - he is thought to be Benj's brother William. 296
I thought the following might be of interest to Orange County Virginia Hawkins researchers. It's from the Fredericksburg Research Resources site. Joyce Libes The Virginia Herald December 16, 1815 3:5 (pg. 3, col. 5) >From various cause, growing out of a long state of illness, and also an earnest desire to pay all my debts, I offer for sale the following tracts of land in Orange County: The one lying on the turnpike road leading from Fredericksburg to Orange Court House, and directly in the centre between the two places, being a most excellent place for a public stand, and containing about 300 acres of land, nearly the whole of which is well timbered, a small quantity only being cleared. The improvements are few, among which is a well of excellent water, having been completed last fall, with an intention of building there; also about 400 young apple trees from Strachman's nursery, just beginning to bear. There is an excellent situation for a distillery and tannery on the above place. Also, the place whereon I now live, and about one mile from the former, containing about the same quantity of acres. The improvements are a common dwelling house, about 60 feet long, stone chimneys, fire places, below and above stairs, and other out houses, with an excellent orchard, and springs in abundance of never failing water. A great quantity of the above land is well calculated for timothy, and is also well adapted to clover and plaster. There is now sown on the place about 60 bushels of wheat, leaving a most excellent shift for a crop of corn the next year, and a large pasture under good fencing, which may easily be made a third shift. The whole of which I am desirous to sell, and will make the payments easy. Any person wishing to purchase will be shewn the lands by applying to the subscriber on the premises. James W. Hawkins Dec. 10
