From Carpenter to Baker to Fishmonger
When John married Hannah Pickering in October of 1838[[1]], he listed his occupation as "carpenter" -- as was his father, Thomas.
When his first child, John Jr., was born in July of 1840 [[2]], John Sr.'s occupation is "baker" and his address is 6 New Square, Minorities, Aldgate, London, Middlesex.
On Ancestry.com, I found an London 1843 Post Office Directory and on Page 212, there is a John Hampton, baker, listed at 274 Strand. I pieced together a map and discovered that 274 Strand is only about 1.5 miles from 6 New Square, Minorities, Aldgate, where John was living. Did John have a bakery shop at 274 Strand?
By 1851[[3]], John and his family are living in Whitechapel on Baker's Row. John is now a fishmonger! John testified in a robbery trial and it's clear from his testimony that he was a businessman with his own fish shop![4]
Sometime between 1851 and 1861, John moved his fish store from 5 Baker's Row to 2 Baker's Row. Perhaps because the Pavillion Theatre (which would likely have been behind his store) burned down in 1856? 23 Feb 1856: Total Destruction of the Pavillion Theatre by Fire
As of the writing, it is unknown for certain when and where John died but what is known is that he continued to be a fishmonger up until July of 1864 when his daughter, Emily, married.
