John W. Grice, 62, esteemed citizen and former trustee of Washington township, died unexpectedly at his home four miles south of here Tuesday morning at 4:45 o'clock. Death is attributed to heart failure. His wife, aroused by his unusually heavy breathing, hastened to telephone for assistance, but death occurred even before she reached the telephone. Mr. Grice had been aware of a failing heart for several years.
Mr. Grice was born August 27, 1880, the son of Eli and Emily (McBride) Grice, and spent his entire lifetime in the vicinity of Fickle Station. On August 27, 1904, he married Rosa Lauchnor, who survives, as does one brother, Lester, of the same community. Three brothers preceded him in death, all of whom died in early manhood. William, the elder brother, died following an operation in 1918; the next year, a younger brother, Chester, was killed in an accident with a runaway team of horses, and a few years later the third brother, Ross, died of a heart attack while traveling on an interurban car.
Mr. Grice, who retired at the beginning of this year from the trusteeship of Washington township, was a member of the United Brethren church at Jefferson, the Order of Knights of Pythias of Mulberry, Order of Eastern Star at Frankfort, and a Past Master of the Vesta Masonic lodge at Jefferson.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. William Eilar at the United Brethren church in Jefferson Thursday afternoon. Burial was in Bunnell cemetery.
