John Greep was baptised on 28th August 1791 at Walkhampton in Devon, on the edge of Dartmoor. He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Greep.

John was married at Walkhampton in 1815, aged 23, to Elizabeth Drake, who was from the nearby village of Bere Ferrers. John and Elizabeth appear to have had at least six children together, baptised between 1815 and 1829 at Walkhampton and Buckland Monachorum.

John and Elizabeth appear together in the 1841 census living at Milton in the parish of Buckland Monachorum, with John working as an agricultural labourer. By 1851 they had moved to Mays in the parish of Meavy.

Elizabeth died in 1856. John survived her by fifteen years, and appears in the 1871 census as an inmate of the Tavistock Union Workhouse. He died later that year, aged 80.
