Neither the origin nor the parents of John Greene are known. In 1904 Lora S. LaMance published a genealogical fiction book entitled The Greene Family and Its Branches in which she alleged that this John Greene identified as John Greene of Quidnesset shared a common ancestry with John Greene of Warwick, surgeon. Unfortunately, no documentation of this alleged common ancestry can be found.

The time period stated for his death can probably be narrowed by a few months. The 24 Mar 1681/2 is the date he and his wife Joan executed deeds to John Greene' sons: James Greene and Daniel Greene. On 14 May 1685 John Greene's son, Lieut John Greene of New Port (i.e. Newport, RI) at a special meeting of the townsmen of East Greenwich (R.I.) was recognized as a townsman and as a participant in the Fones purchase was allowed to draw his lot and farm. Since Lieut John Greene was not identified as "Jun" at this time, his father was probably deceased prior to 14 Mar 1685.

Louise Prosser Bates, in Rhode Island Historical Collections (XI:69-78,117-121; XII:15-26) identifies Lieut John Greene of Newport as the John Greene who married Mary Jefferay. John Greene of Newport died suddenly in Seekonk, MA,4 Sep 1694. Based on her analysis of the East Greenwich records, Mrs. Bates concluded that the John Greene of East Greenwich and Coventry who married Abigail Wardwell was not the son of John Greene of Quidnesset.

The maiden name of the wife of John Greene of Quidnesset, Joan, is not known. She has been confused with the wife of John Greene of Warwick, surgeon, Joan Tattersall. The only mention of Joan, the wife of John Greene of Quidnesset is as a signer of the deeds dated 24 Mar 1681/2. --Bill Wright 22:20, 4 October 2008 (EDT)
