John O. Green came to Texas from Alabama, where he was born. He lived in Nacogdoches County for about 3 years, and moved to Shelby County, where he lived for about 50 years prior to his death. He was an active member of the Methodist Church.
"Mr. Green had been to town on Friday afternoon, and had purchased a bill of groceries. Shortly after returning home he started to take the groceries, which were on the front porch, to the kitchen. As he bent over to pick up a sack of flour, he fell and was unable to rise." Mrs. Green was unable to lift him up, and ran to the nearest neighbors for help. When they returned, Mr. Green was unconscious, and he died very soon after the doctor arrived.
Survivors included his wife, Nancy Ellen; daughters: Callie (Mrs T. S.) Baker of Center and Nannie Belle (Mrs. J. E.) Carter of Shelbyville; 2 sons: Tom Green of Dallas and Vessie Green of Shelbyville; and a brother, Henry Green. Funeral services were held at the Price Cemetery "on the Dave Lawson place." "Hundreds of people from all parts of East Texas were in attendance at the services, and the floral offering was profuse."
