John Gray was baptised on 9th May 1736 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, son of Mary Gray, formerly Whitehead, and her husband John Gray, a labourer, shoemaker and farmer.

John does not appear to have married. His mother died in 1788 and his father died in 1790.

John died at Heckington on 27th January 1817, aged 80. His sister Mary had died just three days earlier. Their deaths were announced in the local newspaper with a comment about the remarkably longevity of members of this family. John left a will which has yet to be researched, although he appears to have appointed his nephew John Turner (his sister Elizabeth's son) as his executor.
