Capt. John Gookin,[1] son of Daniel Gookin and Mariam Birde, was born about 1613 in Kent, England. He passed away 2 November 1643 in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia[2]
John probably arrived in Virginia with his brother Daniel Gookin about 1630 to take possession of the tract granted to their father Daniel Gookin, Marie's Mount, at Newport News. The brothers jointly conveyed the plantation to John Chandler, as recorded in Colonel William Cole's patent of the land in 1685. On 17 October 1636 John Gookin patented 500 acres on Nansemond River and in 1641 acquired 640 acres in Lower Norfolk County.[3]
John married in February 1640/41, Sarah, daughter of Robert Offley and widow of Captain Adam Throughgood of Lower Norfolk County. They had only one daughter, Mary, who was born about 1643.
John Gookin served as Justice of Lower Norfolk County in 1638 and as Burgess from Upper Norfolk County for the Assembly of 6 January 1639
