According to his nephew, Ted Schönström, John's mother ran a boarding house for miners in Silver Plume, Colorado following the death of his father, James, in 1883. John worked in and around the mines a "mule skinner" driving ore wagons pulled by mule teams loaded with silver concentrate. In his later years, he was Town Marshall of Lakeview, Oregon.
