With the old writing John's middle initial is either L or S. Since the Germans named children after their ancestors I believe this is a clue to Mathias Wife's maiden name. The initial shows up in the militia list.

John actually died on a Lancaster Co, Militia engagement. Three members died that day. On the muster roll call for Captain Thomas Robinson's Comany of Lancaster Co Militia, John Gish was reported as dead 21 Apr 1783. Captain Thomas Robinson's company was the eighth company of the fourth Battalion, commanded by Colonel Jacob Cook. One of his descendents states he is buried on the Stern Farm. The Stern farm was his before he died. John married Elizabeth Kapp about 1763 Lancaster Co, Pa. She is the Daughter of John(Johannes) Kapp and Katherine Etter Their children are John, Christian, Mathias, Jacob I, Abraham, Anna Marie, Catherine. John was a blacksmith. His wife's stone reads Gisch which is the old way to spell Gish/Kish. John Was a blacksmith and farmer like his father. His wife Elizabeth moved to Perry and Juanita's counties with some of her children and she is buried there in Barner's Church Cemetery. Her stone is online.

One entry in the Pennsylvania Archives Milita section has his name as John L but it might have been misread and is a S. It is the only time one of the children have a middle initial listed as a clue to their mothers last name.

Jan 11 1791 Book 1788-1791 page 318-319 (wife of Mathias, Catherine Gish has died)
"The court appoints John Stern guardian of the estates of Anna Maria Gish, Abraham Gish and Jacob Gish minor children of John Gish late of Mountjoy township Yoeman(?Leaman) deceased during their minority.respectfully (their being several over the age of fourteen yearrs) agreeable to their written application for that purpose.
The "court appoints John Stern of Mountjoy township guardian over the estates of Mathias Gish and Catheerine Gish minor children of John Gish, Yoeman deceased during their minority, they being several years under the age of minority.

I believe Catrina/Catherine Gisch (mother of John) is the daughter of either John Stern or John Leaman. John Stern is guardian to John's children in 1791 and then John Leaman becomes guardian.

John and Elizabeth have several land records
