22. A Madisonville lawyer, John Finley Gillespy, served three terms in the Tennessee Senate, 1829-33 and 1839-41. Johnson’s reference is to Gillespy s service as legal counsel to persons seeking indemnity for losses covered by the Treaty of Echota, signed in December 1835. That agreement provided for the forced relocation within two years of those Cherokees unwilling to accept U.S. citizenship and for the payment of $5 million to relocated tribesmen for property losses and travel allowances.
