John was born in Wexford, Ireland about 1819. He was of the Church of England faith.

John could read and write. He was a farm labourer and ploughman by trade.

John and Mary were married in Ireland. They left Plymouth on 10th August 1854 on the Duchess of Northumberland which carried 256 assisted immigrants from Ireland. The ship arrived  in Hobart on 6th December 1854.

John was indentured to Mr Whittle of Launceston. His wages were 45 pounds with rations for 12 months.

John and Mary settled in the Morven district where daughter Catherine and son William were born. John's occupation at the time was given as labourer.

By the time son James was born, John was farming about 18 kms south of Deloraine, in Golden Valley, a rugged area on the north eastern side of Quamby Bluff.

It appears that John was buried in the cemetery next to the Catholic Church in Deloraine. The cemetery has now been reclaimed as part of the school yard. The fate of the headstones is unclear.
