John Wesley Flathers was born in Hendricks County, Indiana, September 14, 1845. He was the eldest son of the six children of Lindsey C. and Mary Pace Flathers. In 1855, he came with his parents to Section 23, in Pleasant Grove Township, Olmsted County, Minnesota. He attended local grade school in the former "Meredith" District No. 137, and High School at Chatfield, Minnesota. In 1873 he married Olive Collins, a native of Iowa and Pleasant Grove resident. Their family consisted of: Mary E., Effie and Ivy E., Milo and Clarice. The family were members of the Disciples of Christ Church at Pleasant Grove. J.W. Flathers was a member of the Pleasant Grove Masonic Lodge; Township Supervisor, three years; Township Treasurer ten years; Olmsted County Commissioner, 1882, 1904-1915, and served as State Representative 1886-88. He owned 260 acres of fine land in Pleasant Grove Township. He was an outstanding citizen, and was respected by his fellow men. The family moved to Rochester in 1893.
