Richard Elwell was son of John Elwell (25jan1738-21feb1784) and Mary While (information, D. Elfick), who married 14jan1762 at Walsall, Staffs (IGI). John Elwell was b. abt 9feb1738 at Walsall, son of William Elwell and Margaret (IGI, however the date is suspect as the previous son was b. 6 months earlier). William Elwell (8jan1709-5jul1790) and Margaret Lathom (information, D. Elfick), Black Country ironmaster, had 3 sons, William (1736-1793, Mayor of Walsall), Edward (1737-1809) and John (1739-1784). The book “The Iron Elwells” deals mainly with William (1736). From “Iron Elwells” by Charles John Lister Elwell (1919-2008), who worked for MI5 and broke the Portland spy ring in 1961: John Elwell (b. 1739) left the Midlands and became a successful tin smith and brazier in London. National Archives have the will of John Elwell, ironmonger, St. George Hanover Sq., 1784. John Elwell, smith ironmonger brazier, the corner Swallow St., Hanover St., made a fire insurance policy in 1780 (Londonlives.org). Bailey’s British Directory gives John Elwell, merchant, and Mary Ellwell, ironmonger, Swollow St., Piccadilly. Lowndes Directory 1787 gives John Elwell, merchant, Swallow St. ("Iron Elwells").
