His father, also named John, was born in England and died 1677 in Sandwich. His mother was Elizabeth Freeman born 4 1 1624 in England of Edmund and Bennett (Hodsell) Freeman. She died 1677 in Sandwich. They were married 1645.

The father, John, came to America in the "Fortune" in 1621 and was one of the first settlers of Sandwich in 1643. He was appointed to train militia in what was then called the Sandwich Train Band. He was a lieutenant and commanding officer for many years.

Another source believed his parents to have been Mordecai and Sarah Ellis.

JOHN, Sandwich, m[arried]. a[bout]. 1645, Elizabeth d[aughter]. of first Edmund Freeman, had, perhaps, Bennet, b[orn]. 27 Feb. 1649; but certain Mordecai, 24 Mar. 1651; Joel, 20 Mar. 1655; and Matthias, 2 June 1657; d[ied]. 1677, then call[ed]. j[unio]r. yet wh[o]. was the sen[ior]. is unkn[own]. His w[ife]. surv[ived]. and with Mordecai admin[istered]. the est[ate].
