John Drake's origins have yet to be established. It is possible that he was the John Drake baptised at Stoke Damerel in 1722, but proof of this has yet to be found.

John's first confirmed sighting is on 7th September 1746 when he married Mary Fursman at Bere Ferrers in Devon. They appear to have had just two children together: Elizabeth in 1747 and John in 1754, both baptised at Bere Ferrers.

Mary died in 1763. John survived her by nearly seven years, being buried at Bere Ferrers on 25th March 1770.
