At the age of seventeen he enlisted in the Zouave 34th Ohio Regiment. The first battle they entered, most of the regiment were killed. He was then transferred to the 36th Ohio infantry. He was standing guard at night when a Confederate officer rode up and shot him with his sidearm. The ball hit John's belt buckle and wounded him. He was captured by the South and sent to Libby Prison where he was held for three months until the end of the war in 1865. John was on active duty in Washington D.C. the night Abraham Lincoln was shot. John left Ohio and settled in Scammon, Kansas where he homesteaded. His first wife Hattie Starner died in childbirth, the child also died. He later went to Missouri where he married Mary Jane Lewis at Salem, Missouri 17 APR 1872. |
