John Dingwall was living in Strelitz [1](a colonia) part of the forfeited estates of the Drummond family in 1763. The Forfeited estate file no 288, held in the National Archives of Scotland, advise that he was from Dingwall in Ross, that he had served in the 88th Regiment of Foote, known as the Cameron Highlanders for three years and that he was a butcher. The document was a list of those interred at Strelitz and written circa 1766. His age was given as 29 years. This means he was born about 1735, although many times, these ages have been guesses. As previously advised John married Ann Hunter in 1764, and a George Hunter is also mentioned in the lists. It is noted that a number of Mckenzie soldiers are also mentioned, and have asked that these be checked as John remarried in 1800 to Elspeth Mckenzie at Coupar Angus. For John to be allowed to continue to live there to 1800 must have been a special deal, as the land was given back to the Drummond family circa 1785.

The 88th Regiment fought in the 7 years war, and was disbanded in 1763. It served under Keith and Campbell and that the two divisions were split between Perth and linlithgow. Dingwall families living in the Dingwall district between 1735 and 1760, which would have been the time John was living their prior to his enlistment.
