Transcription: " Birth: Nov. 29, 1828, Germany; Death: March 12, 1863, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania, USA.
The husband of Anna M. Deiner, whom he married on September 28, 1851, in Chambersburg, Franklin County. In 1860 he was a shoemaker and musician presumably living in Hanover, York County. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes. He was director of Hanover's Infantry Silver Band and reputedly a "master of the E-flat soprano horn".
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in November 1862 but opted to enlist as principle musician with the 87th Pa. Infantry. Congress had defunded regimental bands, but the regiment raised money to maintain its band. Allegedly contracted a serious illness after he led the band in a serenade for General Robert Huston Milroy on a brutally cold evening in Winchester, Virginia. Taken home to Hanover to recover, he instead died of pleurisy. When the news reached Winchester, the 87th Pa Band paid tribute to him." [Information from Find A Grave submission found on Ancestry]
