John Diener was a shoemaker and musician living in Pennsylvania when he enrolled in the Band of the 87th Regiment of Pennsylvania volunteers on 30 Oct 1862 in York, Pennsylvania. He was a Private who volunteered to serve a three year term. He reportedly "contracted a serious illness after he led the band in a serenade for General Robert Huston Milroy on a brutally cold evening in Winchester, Virginia". His disease was variously described as pleurisy, consumption, and pneumonia. He was taken home (to Hanover, Pennsylvania) where he died 23 March, 1863. References
