Statement by James's grandson John in 1926: I, John S. Crawford, from actual knowledge, family tradition, and information received through authoritative sources, do hereby make the following declaration: That I am sixty-nine years of age; that I reside on a farm near Hillsboro, in the county of Fleming and State of Kentucky; that I am the son of John Simpson Crawford', who died in the year 1870, and the only one of his children now living; and that the said John Simpson Crawford, my father, was the son of James Crawford, who was born in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, and his legal and lawful wife Sarah Vansandt, who was also a native of the State of Virginia. That the said James Crawford, my grandfather, and the said Sarah (Vansandt) Crawford, my grandmother, were united in marriage in the county of Botetourt and State of Virginia, in the year 1786; and that Crawford and his wife the said Sarah (Vansandt) Crawford, about the year 1795, moved from the State of Virginia to the State of Kentucky, and, about year 1800, the former squatted on a tract of land situated in the county of Fleming, in the State last aforesaid, where he and his said wife continued to reside until the dates of their deaths. That the same James Crawford and his wife, the said Sarah (Vansandt) Crawford, were both buried on the farm acquired, as aforesaid, and on which I now reside; that I have taken the dates of their deaths from the inscriptions on the tombstones which mark their respective graves; and that from the said inscriptions, I know that the said Sarah (Vansandt) Crawford died on November 25, 1827, and that the said James Crawford died on May 16, 1836. I further state that the said James Crawford and his wife, the said Sarah (Vansandt) Crawford, had fourteen children, whose names were as follows: 1-.- Mary Crawford 2.-Alexander Crawford 3.-- Henry Hogburn Crawford 4.-- Isaiah Crawford 5.-- Margery Crawford 6.-- Sarah Crawford 7.-- James Crawford 8.-- Samuel Crawford 9.-- Jane Crawford 10.- John Simpson Crawford 11.- Joshua Crawford 12.- William Crawford 13.- Elizabeth Crawford 14.- Anna Crawford That the said Alexander Crawford, my uncle, designated as number two in the above list of children of the said James Crawford and his wife, the said Sarah (Vansandt) Crawford, was born in the State of Virginia, moved to the State of Kentucky with his said father and mother, and at a later date removed to the State of Illinois. I further state that the said James Crawford was a soldier in the Revolutionary War; that he enlisted in said war from the County of Botetourt and State of Virginia; and that he received a pension for his service therein.
