"The Milton Junction Telephone", Thursday, August 3, 1933, p 4.
John Benton Crandall, 71, resident of Milton Junction and vicinity for 44 years, died at 6:30 p. m. Saturday in his home here after having been in failing health for two years. He had been confined to his bed the past two weeks.
Mr. Crandall was born in Walworth, May 19, 1862, the oldest son of Roswell and Juliette Crandall, and when a year old went with his parents to Transit, Sibley county, Minn. During his boyhood there he experienced the hardships of pioneer life. He returned to Walworth at the age of 12 and lived there until employment took him to Utica, Wis. There he married Addie Whitford, younger daughter of John and Jane Burdick Whitford in April, 1884. In the winter of 1891 they moved into their newly completed home in Milton Junction. This was the beginning of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances contacted throughout this community and surrounding vicinity as he followed his trade of painting and paperhanging.
At the age of 16, Mr. Crandall was baptized by Elder Livormore at Lake Geneva and joined the Seventh Day Baptist church in Walworth. After coming to Milton Junction he transferred his membership to the local Seventh Day Baptist church and for many years was a member of the choir.
He is survived by his widow; three daughters, Bernice, at home, Mrs. Winifred Bradford, Pontiac, Mich., and Mrs. Flora DeLong, Reedsburg; one brother, Sherman L. Crandall of Brodhead; and three sisters, Mrs. E. O. Crandall and Mrs. George E. Coon, both of Milton Junction, and Mrs. F. O. Burdick, Boulder, Colo.
An only grandchild, John Bradford, died Dec. 29, 1932. Fred J. Crandall, Albion, and Jessie L. Jacobs, Miami, Fla., had a home with this family for many years.
The funeral was held at 2:30 p. m. Monday in the home, with theRev. J. F. Randolph, Seventh Day Baptist church, officiating, assisted by Prof. Edwin Shaw of Milton college. The pallbearers were six nephews: Eldon Crandall, Battle Creek, Mich., Ross Coon, Robert Greene and Prof. Leland Shaw, all of Milton; Dr. Wallace Coon, Walworth; and Carroll L. Coon, Janesville. Burial was in Milton Junction cemetery.
Out of town relatives who attended were S. L. Crandall and Mrs. Fyrne Ayres, Brodhead; Dr. and Mrs. W. W. Coon, Roy Crandall, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Converse and Mrs. D. P. Crandall of Walworth; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Crandall, Highland Park, Ill; Mrs. A. E. Webster, River Forest, Ill; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burdick, Edgerton; Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Bradford, Pontiac, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Homer DeLong, Reedsburg.
