22 July 1754, Petition to Gov. Hamilton for defense against French and French Indians, John Craig among many others signing. [Centennial. The Settlement, Formation and Progress of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, from 1785-1876, by George H. Morgan, of Harrisburg, Historical Sketch of Dauphin County, PA, pg. 22]

1756: Some time in the latter part of October, the Indians again visited Hanover township, where they murdered, under circumstances of much cruelty, several families, among whom was one Andrew Berryhill. On the 22d of October, they killed John Craig and his wife, scalped them both, burned several houses, and carried off Samuel Ainsworth, a lad about thirteen years old. The next day they scalped a German, whose name has not been given.

Many of the settlers had fled, and not a few were killed. The writer examined the tax collector's duplicate of several townships, for 1756, and found, from entries made in these, by the collectors, that in East Hanover Township, the following had fled from their houses: Andrew Karsnits, John Gilliland, John McColloch, Walter McFarland, Robert Kirkwood, William Robison, Valentine Stoffolbeim, Andrew Cleaman, Rudolph Fry, Peter Walmer, John McColloch, James Rafter, Moses Vance, John Brower, Frederick Noah, Jacob Moser, Philip Mauerer, Barnhart Beshore, Jacob Beshore, Matthias Beshore, William McCullough, Philip Calp, Casper Yost, Conrad Cleck, Christian Albert, Daniel Moser, John McClure, John Anderson, Thomas Shirley, James Graham, Barnet McNett, Andrew Brown, William Brown, Andrew McMahon, Thomas Hume, Thomas Strean, John Hume, Peter Wolf, Henry Kuntz, William Watson, John Stuart, John Porterfield, David Strean, John Strean, Andrew McCrath, James McCurry, Conrad Rice, Alexander Swan, John Grean.

Andrew Berrihill, killed; Samuel Ainsworth's son was taken; John Craig, killed, and a boy taken captive. The whole tax duplicate contains about a hundred names.[The History and Topography of Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin, Bedford, Adams, and Perry Counties [Pennsylvania]: Containing a Brief History of the First Settlers, Notices of the Leading Events, Incidents and Interesting Facts, Both General and Local, in the History of These Counties, General & Statistical Descriptions of All the Principal Boroughs, Towns, Villages, &c., with an Appendix ... The colonial accounts reveal some Craig problems with Indians. In Franklin county, [s/b Lancaster County] John Craig and his wife Isabel of East Hanover township were scalped by Indians in 1756; Samuel Craig was killed by Indians while on his way to Fort Ligonier in 1777; while Daniel Craig of Washington county married the widow of Thomas Urie who had been murdered by Indians in 1790.
