He arrived in the Creston area in 1888. He Colwill became a naturalized citizen of the United States November 6, 1894. They settled on a farm about 2 miles southeast of Creston and farmed until February 18, 1919 when all their livestock, machinery, harness etc. were sold at public auction. The sale notice listed 14 head of horses, 45 head of cattle, 12 bred sows, 100 Plymouth Rock hens, and machinery and tools too numerous to list. After the sale, the Colwills moved to Creston and lived in the first house east of the Lutheran church. John then became the road commissioner for Dement Township.
