John was born on 16 Sept 1810 at Saddle River Twp., Bergen Co., New Jersey to Matthew D. Coe and Martha Gurnee. He was married to Caroline Ackerson on 1 Feb. 1838 at Benton, Yates Co., New York. He served in the American Civil War from 1862 until he died from illness he contracted while on campaign from Iowa through Vicksburg, Mississippi. John was sent home from the Army hospital in August 1863 to recover of his illness, but never recovered and finally succumbed on 6 October 1863 at his home near Mechanicsville, Cedar Co., Iowa.

'Service or Death:' John D. Coe, mustered July 14, 62 Rolls. Died Oct 6th 1863. Reg. Surgeon States that soldier was taken sick during winter of 62 and 3 with Diarrhea and Pneumonia – rejoined his Reg. in March following. was again taken sick with same Diseases and placed in Hospital. Surgeon of Hospital reports soldier admitted July 28, 1863 from Coon, Diarrhea and was furloughed Aug. 12, 1863. Affidavit of attending Physician shows that on his arrival home he was suffering from Diarrhea – great emaciation and Phthisis Pulmonalio – that he finally died of Consumption Oct 6, 63 (64 is stated by clerical error)"

DECLARATION FOR OBTAINING A WIDOW’S ARMY PENSION. State of Iowa County of Cedar On this 10th day of November, A.D. 1863 personally appeared before me (1) A Shaw, Clerk of the District Court of said county, (2) Caroline A. Coe, a resident of Linn Township in the County of Cedar and State of Iowa aged 45 years, who being first duly sword according to law, doth, on her oath make the following Declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by Act of Congress approved July 14, 1862. That she is the wide of (3) John D. Coe who was a (4) private in Company (5) H commanded by Capt. Flannagan in the (6) 35th Regiment of (7) Iowa Vols in the War of 1861, and who (8) died at Home near Mechanicsville in Cedar County, *Chronic Diarrhea and Consumption on the 6th of Oct 1863 she further declares that she was married to the said (3) John D. Coe on the 1st of February A.D., 1837; that her husband, the aforementioned (3) John D. Coe died on the day aforesaid, and that she has remained a widow ever since that period (9) and now is a widow as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed. That she had born to her of said soldier 7 children, aged and named, and who reside as follows: W.H. Coe who died in US Service, Sarah A. Coe, aged, 22 years, Adaline Coe aged 20 years, Mary Coe aged 17 years, Franklin G. Coe, aged 14 years, Clarence M. Coe, aged 12 years, Ella H. Coe, aged - nm [not mentioned] deceased – all of their children except Adaline & those who are deceased are now living with applicant in Cedar Co., Iowa. She hereby appoints Wm. Van Marter her Attorney to prosecute this her claim for Pension, with full power of substitution. She also declares that she has not in any manner been engaged in, or aided or abetted the Rebellion in the United States; that her Post Office address is (10) Mechanicsville Cedar County Iowa Signature of Claimant Caroline A Coe Also, personally appeared (11) Catharine Coe of Sandusky County, Ohio, Wells Spicer, resident of Cedar Co. Iowa persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw (2) Caroline A. Coe sign her name to the foregoing Declaration; that applicant is now a widow, and has remained a widow since the death of her said husband; and they further swear that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of the applicant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be, and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. 1st Witness’ Signature, Catharine Coe 2nd Witness’ Signature, Wells Spicer Sworn and subscribed before me this 10th day of November A.D. 1836 and I certify that said witnesses are credible, and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim.
