Will Transcript

WILL OF JOHN C. CHRISTOPHER
In the name of God Amen, I, John Christopher, of the County of Lunenburg, State of Virginia, being in good health and of sound mind and memory (blessed be almighty God for the same) do make and publish this my last will and Testament in manner and form following.
First, after the payment of all my Just Debts, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth Christopher, one negro woman named Vincy and her increase, one bed and bed clothing, together with one bed and bed clothing, together with the trund and chest, known in the family as my wifes.
2nd. I loan to my wife during her natural life 160 acres of land including my houses and at her death to go to my son Washington. The balance of my land, I wish divided Theod”k Love and my daughter Pamelia Jane, in the following manner that is to say, I wish the line to commence at a corner white oak near the gate on the path to the house to run from thence to the Church Road-cutting off the above bequest of 160 acres to my wife and Washington., to the south, and the north part of the tract to be divided between Theod”k Love and Pamelia Jane. 100 acres of which I wish to be given to Theod”k Love and the balance to Pamelia Jane.
3rd. To my daugher Nancy, I give one bed and bed clothing together with Ten dollars annually untile the death of my wife, the money to be paid from the crops raised on the plantation.
4thly. To my Grandaughter Sarah Ann Elizabeth Cornelia Barnes, I give the sum of Fifty Dollars to be paid when she attains to eighteen years of age, and at the death of my wife I wish her to have an equal part oof my estate, with the rest of my children.
5thly. To Washington and Pamelia Jane I give one bed and bed clothing to each. To Washington one horse, and saddle, together with my still and to Pamelia Jane I give my clock.
6th The debts that I may be owing at the time of my decease, I wish paid from the sale of the crops, on hand or from the sale of such part of my stock, as may with greatest convenience be spared from the premies.
7th After my decease, I wish my negro man Lewis to be hired out, until the death of my wife either monthly or yearly at the descretion of my executor.
Lastly at the death of my wife, I wish all the estate of every description that has not been desposed of by this will sold publickly on a credit of twelve months and the proceeds equally divided among all my children.
I nominate William G. Overton, Washington Maddux and Henderson Lee executors of this my Last Will and Testament.

    1840 Census Lunenburg Co., Va. Shows Elizabeth as head of household and
    since John died shortly after the 1st of the year, he
    must have already been seriously ill at the time the
    census was taken. His will was filed 2/10/1840, so if
    I can find the date of the census, we can get pretty
    close to the actual date of death.
