His sister, Susan, relates the following story: It was aSunday afternoon when "Hud" came home from the War. He came in sick, tired, and worn out. When his mother ran to hug him, he said "Don't touch me; I'm covered with lice." "Get me a tub of good, warm water and soap, something clean to put on." "Then be cooking me something to eat!" Both he and his brother Shadrack died from the wounds and exposure suffered during the War.
