Connie, you mentioned that the older Randolph Casey (the RWS) was born in "Roanoke County" VA in 1737. I know that's commonly written, but since Roanoke Co., VA wasn't formed until 1838 (from Botetourt Co., which was formed from Augusta Co.), he couldn't have been literally born in Roanoke Co. since it didn't exist then. And, it's a little unclear as to where the "Roanoke River Valley" would have been exactly, since the Roanoke River also flows through North Carolina for a good ways, as well as through Virginia.

I hope someday that someone will discover and share some gold-standard proof for the things that are commonly stated about the Abner Casey ("b 1700") line. Most everything that continues to be repeated again and again seems to come from manuscripts written in the late 1800s. On the other hand, there is much documentation for the Peter Casey who is said to have been the younger brother of that same Abner. Makes you wonder, why is Abner not to be found in the records of Virginia, Maryland, or North Carolina? How did he get to South Carolina? How do we really know that he "docked in Baltimore in 1725?" How do we know his wife's name was Harriet Green? What evidence of this older Abner is there in South Carolina? These are just questions that naturally arise.

It's interesting that you mention a Nicholas Casey being the father of the John Casey who was said to be the father of the oldest Abner Casey. There is solid documentation (deeds, will) about the Nicholas Casey who was in Isle of Wight County, Virginia as early as 1688 (before Abner Casey was said to have been born in 1700 in Tyrone Co., Ireland). That IOW Nicholas had several children named in his 1713 will, but not one of them was a John...("son Nicholas; son Thomas; three youngest daughters by my last wife; son Richard; daughter Ann; daughter Mary; daughter Sarah; wife Jane; five youngest children, Martha, Jane, Ruth, Nicholas and Thomas.")

So, maybe it's a different Nicholas Casey back in Ireland who you list as the grandfather of Abner?? All these questions continue to intrigue me because I've never seen any solid evidence. The name Nicholas was used in the Peter Casey line, but it may be because his father-in-law was supposedly named Nicholas (DuPuy).

This is beside the point of your DAR interest since they won't require proof of anyone except the descendants of your DAR ancestor. But if you were to state something in the application, you'd likely want it to be "provable."

By the way, there is a Hiram Casey who was the son of a Randolph Casey, and there is proof of that relationship, but I don't necessarily think the same pair you're looking for. This is what I have in my notes:

Will Book B, pp. 13-15: Will of Matthew Couch of Spartanburgh District…to wife Elizabeth Couch, all of my estate…to my dear Stepson Levi Stone…to my stepdaughter Barbara Crow…to Hiram Casey, son of Randolph Casey…to Matthew Casey, son of Randolph Casey…all the rest of my estate real & personal to be sold & equally divided between Levi Stone & Barbara Crow; wife Elizabeth Couch sole Extx, Levi Stone & Randolph Casey, exrs. 7 Sept 1816. Matthew Couch (x) (LS), wit: J.F. Grimke, Henry Mcredith, Archibald Lynch. Prov. by Archibald Lynch 14 Aug 1821.

I've seen this Randolph Casey listed as the son of William Casey and his wife, last name of Allison. Of this I'm not certain, just mentioning in case it helps. My Caseys are of a different line. Best wishes with your DAR quest. - Joyce Harris joy.harr@@swbell.net

I recently heard from a nice lady, Jeane Groves from Tucson more about Abner and Peter. I am also descended from Abner's line but I was curious about Peter.

From the information I have apparently there was a third brother, John, who did not immegrate from Ireland with Abner and Peter. They landed in Baltimore about 1726 and lived there for a few year. It appears that they may have married sisters named Green. That name is a given name that is carried down through generations both Casey families. Abner and Peter apparently left Baltimore about the same time. Abner moved to the Southern part of Virginia and lived in the James and Roanoke Riber balleys a few years before moving to South Caroline. Later the family moved to Tennessee and then on to Randolph County, Illinois. Peter Casey and his family went to West Virginia and settled on the South fork of the Potomic river in what is now Hampshire county. He and his family continued to live there. Peter died in early July of 1787 and we have a copy of his will. He left his Plantation to his son Nicholas and left $150 pounds each to his three daughters; Sarah, Catherine, and Rebeka and his son-in-law Philip Ross and $50 pounds to grandaughter Magdaline Conner. He left "all his slaves and personal estate to the three daughters. Tom Casey caseymrpi@@aol.com
