    Carter, John R.--Born near Auburn, Kan., July 31, 1870; son of J.S. and Elizabeth (Simerwell) C.; mother was, according to Wilder's Annals of Kansas, probably the first white girl born in Kansas; her father, Rev. Robert Simerwell, and his wife, came to the Shawnee Mission, Oct., 1833, as missionaries to the Pottawatomies. Mr. C. was educated, Ottawa Univ., 3 years, and State Normal, 1 year; principal Oakland School, Sept., 1898-1905; elected supt. of public instruction, Shawnee Co., Nov., 1904; married Mary G. Strawn, Topeka, May, 1896. Res.: 317 Winfield Ave.
