    CARSWELL, JOHN S. - At Homestead, Baltimore city, on February 18th, 1889, JOHN S. CARSWELL, aged 82 years.

    Mr. John S. Carswell, aged 82 years, died on Monday, 18th inst., at Homestead. The deceased was born in Scotland and came to the United States in 1827, and was engaged in the handling of turpentine. He first applied the process of distilling turpentine for illuminating purposes. He retired from business 15 years ago. In 1840 he married Harriet Von Ripper, a native of Bellville, N. J., who died in 1856. He had seven children, three of whom survive him -- Robt. S. Carswell, Lockhart S. Carswell and Mrs. Elizabeth M. Gault. For 40 years Mr. Carswell was connected with Broadway Presbyterian Church. He was an Odd Fellow and member of St. Andrew's Society.
