"Uncle John Carroll came to California in 1864 with Grandfather Evans's emigrant train. They were on the road five months or more, and well do I remember hearing papa tell of many thrilling experiences they had with Indians and many hardships endured while crossing the plains. Uncle John was then about 29 years of age, while papa was only 19 years old. Uncle John remained in California a few years; after returning to Illinois he and Aunt Kat were married in Nov.
