Will of John Carothers

Written: October 14, 1767
Registrar's Office, Carlisle, Pa.
Will of JOHN Carothers of East Pennsboro Tp Will book D p 172 dated Oct 14, 1767 says he is weak in body & gives: To my wife Sarah 1/3 of personal estate & benefit of 1/3 of R.E. during life.
To my two sons Robert & James a tract of land in Mecklinburg [sic] Co, N.C. equally. If either should die before coming to mature age share to go to other sons.
Directs that the rest of the children be maintained from the proceeds of the place & stock until schooled & fit for learning trades if so inclined & to my two daughters, Margaret & Isabel are to be equal shares with my sons John & William & Andrew & Samuel and Ezekiel & Archibald & sent to school as my executors, shall think proper & after my wife is delivered of the child, it shall be educated & share equally other provisions if Margaret marries.
Appoints my trusty friends David Bell & John Crothers Exrs.

John Carothers,

1725 - 1783

John was one of five brothers and two sisters, all but one of whom emigrated to America about 1740. John himself emigrated by way of Northern Ireland in 1745. He was born in Dumfries, but died in Cumberland Cty., Pennsylvania, where he is buried near Silver Springs Presbyterian Church. He was a veteran of Pontiac's Rebellion, and was a Mason. His father is thought to have been Robert Carothers. After he died, his wife, the former Sarah Neely, moved to Mecklenburg Cty., North Carolina, along with three of their sons. John's twin brother Hugh had already settled in that area.
