Following taken from baptismal record from Madeira, Portugal Portugal. Godfather: Luiz da Franca Pitta, single, funnel-maker (plumber, tinsmith??) Godmother: Ilda Maria do Carmo Nunes Periera Record has no seal as they were too poor. Baptised as Joao da Camara Priest-Antonio Nicolau Fernandes We always celebrated Dads birthday on Aug 21st (&SS date was Aug 21 1902; we know he lied about his age so he could work as a child), but actual record says Aug 17th 1906. Dad came to the US with his mother and 4 brothers when he was 7 years old. His Dad had come over 3 years earlier. They lived in New Bedford Massachusetts 10 years or so before moving to Brooklyn NY and then Mineola, Long Island. He married Mom when he was 33 years old (dated her sister Kay before that...while Mom was dating Kays future husband, & also dads brother, Teddy). He was 47 years old when I, the baby of the family, was born. Funniest memory...I was a smart-mouthed 13-14 year old...with a retired father who spent most of his time sitting in his chair. Was I shocked the day he actually got up and chased me down the block after what I thought was an empty threat to do so! Fondest memory-after finally convincing him to make a doctors appointment because of the pain in his shoulder. I drove from my home in Holbrook, with my 3 month old daughter to take him to his appointment. I remember vividly looking over at him while driving, and he was just sitting there holding my daughter and playing with her with such love and tenderness (yes this was before mandatory child car seats!!!)...a side of him I'd never seen (...or maybe just never appreciated). Dad died a week later.
