Gordon grew up in Iowa and West Virginia, attending Greenbrier Military School and West Virginia University, where he was an active member in Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated as an optometrist from Southern College of Optometry in 1954, after which he served a tour of duty as an officer in the United States Army. He served as president of both organizations. In 1986, Dr. Butterfield married Patty Rai Hunt Smith, of Lexington, Kentucky, and resumed his optometry practice in Versailles, Kentucky. He enjoyed his practice there and was active in the Versailles Kiwanis where he was president for two terms. He was also a member of Crestwood Christian Church in Lexington. During this time, he enjoyed spending time at his beloved lake house on Herrington Lake in Burgin, Kentucky, where he served two terms as Commodore of the Herrington Lake Yacht Club.
