    In June 1861, he raised a volunteer company in Red River County which became part of the 11th Texas Cavalry; he was elected captain. A year later, he was promoted to colonel of the 11th Texas Cavalry on resignation of William C. Young. On 31 Dec 1862, he was mortally wounded at Murfreesboro while leading a charge against a Union battery; he continued to lead his regiment until he lost consciousness.
