John Monroe Buckner, son of Dennis and Laura (Mishler) Buckner, was born on June 6, 1918, in rural Audubon County, Iowa. While growing up, he attended school in Gray, Iowa, and rural Guthrie County, Iowa. After his schooling, John entered the United States Army where he served his country honorably overseas during World War II.

On August 11, 1949, he was united in marriage to Irene Rasmussen at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Candace, Gregory and David. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Buckner farmed together on a farm outside of Jacksonville until their retirement in 1970 when they then made their home in Harlan. In 1973, they purchased and operated the Harlan Motel until 1977. Irene died on April 5, 1997, and John continued to make his home in Harlan until September of 2005, when he moved to West Des Moines, Iowa where he was closer to his family.

John died at his home in West Des Moines, Iowa on September 2, 2006, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, two months and twenty-seven days. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sons, David Dean Buckner in 1958 and Gregory John Buckner in 1976 and his siter, Ethel Buckner Alt.

John is survived by his daughter, Candace and her husband Dennis George of West Des Moines, Iowa; his grandsons: Daniel George of Hillsboro, Oregon and Eric George and his wife Beth of Ankeny, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 , at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiating. Interment was in the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa with Daniel George, Eric George, Ron. Doonan, Wayne Petersen, Carl Petersen, and Jeff Peterson serving as casket bearers.
